The castle, erected between 1375 and 1381, belongs to the complex of defensive works of the Verona territory, started by Cansignorio and concluded by Antonio, the last of the Scaligeri. The castle of Lazise sees the completion of its fortified walls together with the magnificent fortress at the hands of the great Scaligeri Lords of Milan, when already their rule was nearing the end. They owe many important buildings in our town: after some episodes of conflict they decide to reinforce the port with the Darsena, the curtain and the tower of the Cadenon; these elements together served as protection for the inhabitants from both the lake side and the inner side.
A deep moat surrounded the sides with its three doors: to the east the Gate of San Zeno, the only one once intended for the population, stood at the base of a high tower and its outer niche had several effigies including a Madonna with child and St. Mark protector of Ve netia; In the interior, however, a Madonna was painted that was destroyed and then replaced by a statue that belonged to the main door of the old San Zeno, hence today's name. To the north, the Cansignorio Gate built on the last section of the wall was greatly affected by the clashes between Venice and Milan that took place around the '400, served as an outlet in case of need but was even closed with a wall for more than 200 years to Spanish raids of the 1700s. To the south The Lion's Gate, which took its name during the domination of Venice, used by military militias, was adorned with the symbol of the great Venetian city. The fortress has two entrances: it was once equipped with drawbridges and shutters and its courtyard where the captain's palace stood. A walkway protected by the battlement connected the six towers, the kept could be detached from the rest by raising the drawbridge: that was the maximum point of resistance, ended in a turret the center of force on which depended the fate of the Battles. The port of the flotilla attached to the fortress, along about 60 meters, al-tuned for emergencies the galleys and other minor boats; on two of its towers a coat of arms suggests that the port was built following the release of the famous diploma of Emperor Otto II: today of all this remains only the forehead and a turret in the park.
The Darsena with San Nicolò is part of the walled enclosure, the embattled front of the southern side of the commercial port was joined to the rest and ended in a tower, which served to bar the entrance in times of war or pestilence if you were not recognized first. The entire medieval fortification was finally completed according to the necessity of the era with sturdy stakes called bastie, to block the inflows of the districts to the lake. To date, the castle can only be visited through guided tours.
